Jennifer Lopez, star of upcoming musical drama Kiss Of The Spider Woman, has said the film is a ‘love letter to the queer community’.
One of many highly anticipated upcomign queer films, Kiss of the Spider Woman, from director Bill Condon, is based on the 1992 stage musical by playwrights Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb, which itself was adapted from the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig.
The film’s official logline reads: “Valentín (Diego Luna), a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a window dresser convicted of public indecency. The two form an unlikely bond as Molina recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical starring his favourite silver screen diva, Ingrid Luna/ Aurora/ The Spider Woman (Jennifer Lopez).”
In an interview with CBS News’ Sunday Morning, Lopez told correspondent Lee Cowan that “in times of hate, love is the answer, and that’s really what the movie is about.”
The pop-star-cum-actress explained: ““It is a love letter, in a way, to the Latin community and to the queer community, this movie.
“Because in a time like this, when those communities are being demonised and marginalised, this is a big movie with three Latin stars in it, with the lead being from the queer community as well. So, again, I feel like this story, as many times as it’s been told, needed to be told again.”
She later added: “When times are awful, we turn to art and beauty and music and movies to save us.”
Lopez plays Latina actress Ingrid Luna, whom Molina takes inspiration from due to her refusal to being made to seem American while playing ‘The Spider Woman’ in in-universe musical.
After its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to hit theatres on 10 October.
