Whether you know Robert Irwin from his thrilling routines on Dancing with the Stars, that underwear campaign, or simply his conservation and wildlife work there’s one thing you really should know, he’s a “proud” LGBTQ+ ally.
The son of the late ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin, Robert has taken after his father in terms of working with animals as well as his good looks and killer charm.
And much like his sister, Bindi (who also competed in Dancing with the Stars – and won!) Robert has made his position clear that when it comes to the gays and theys, he’s a proud ally. What evidence do we have of this? Simples. He said so himself.

As a teenager back in 2020 Robert posted a photo to his social media accounts of a rainbow hanging high some grassy plains with a grey sky in the background. And given that his Instagram handle is @robertirwinphotography, we have to hand it to the now-21-year-old, he captured a beautiful image.
The picture was accompanied by the caption: “Proud to be an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community this #comingoutday“
As well as being a lovely picture it’s a simple yet loud and clear declaration of support and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community.
We also imagine Robert is cool with all the attention he’s been getting from the gays, especially this year.
First there was that killer ad campaign for the Australian underwear brand, Bonds. Having already dipped his toes into the modelling world at the Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2024, Robert pulled out (not that) all the stops earlier this year.
The “Made For Down Under” campaign sees the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here Australia host posing with actual snakes, a spider and a lizard in his boxers, and nothing else. It’s a lot, in many ways. And it’s safe to say the reactions were thirsty!
Robert later responded to all the hype he’d generated. In September, he told People: “I did not expect the reaction it got! I’m not going to lie: It was a little strange. But people were also very kind. I forget that so many people have been on my journey since I was tiny – I was born on Crocodile Hunter. I’m grateful to everyone who’s been there from the little Bobby days, but yes, I’m all grown up.”
More recently the conservationist has been tearing it up on the dance floor and we mean that quite literally. Only a few weeks in and Robert is a favourite to win the competition, especially after he ripped off his shirt in his Salsa, setting pulses racing.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in September, Irwin described being on DWTS as “a childhood dream.” He also said it was a “full circle thing” having watched sister Bindi win season 21. It now appears as if he stands a pretty good chance at following in Bindi’s footsteps. Literally!
Whatever happens we’ll be there cheering him on. Just as Robert supports the LGBTQ+ community, we’re supporting him. And we know we won’t be the only queer people doing so!
