RuPaul’s Drag Race icon Kori Toot has explained the creation of (deranged) Cameo character Kori Toot – inspired by season seventeen sister Suzie Toot.
If you’re new here, we’re sorry for the information that we’re about to impart.
Kori King, who appeared on the seventeenth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race alongside Onya Nurve, Jewels Sparkles, Sam Star, Lexi Love and (crucially) Suzie Toot, among others, has arguably snatched the title of breakout star of the the latest batch of queens.
Alongside a gagworthy Emmys look and viral interaction with IShowSpeed, this is due, in no small part, to her iconic account on Cameo; a platform where fans can pay for their favourite celebrities or figures to send them personalised video messages.
But with Kori, there’s a twist. The Boston-based baddie has an entire Kori Cinematic Universe of characters with which she provides these Cameos, including Kori Griffin, Kori Siwa, Kori X Change the one and only Kori Toot – a Suzi-fied (and terrifying) version of Kori King.
In a YouTube video with season eight RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen, Kori has finally explained why she began forcing Kori Toot upon innocent fans.
“Everybody was talking mess about Suzie’s makeup [on the show],” Kori explained. “She looked hideous. She knows she was ugly!”
“Even in the room, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is a face, isn’t it.’ Everyone was making fun of her makeup, and I was like, ‘You know what? How can I capitalise on this and make it about me?'”
Kori continued of the birth of Kori Toot: “At any point in time, it’s like: ‘How can I make this about me?’
“So then, I was like, I’m going to make a YouTube video, because everyone’s googling [Suzie], of me doing my makeup as her, and do Cameos as her. And then as I did it, I was trying to earnestly talk like her, and then it just turned into Mickey Mouse.“
Of the distinctive Kori Toot voice, Kori admitted that that is very much not how Suzie sounds, “But in the room, that’s what we thought she sounded like, because of the way she looked.
“That’s how much the makeup changed how we thought she sounded. We were like, making fun of her entrance, and we watched the first episode, and we were like, ‘Oh, she doesn’t sound like that.'”
Though season 18 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has not aired, casting has opened for season 19.
And, on the more Nancy Drew-esque side of things, some drag detectives have already pulled together a cast list for All Stars 11…
Drag Race UK also recently opened casting for its eighth season, too, despite season seven airing currently.
