Drag Race star Fontana has come out as a transgender woman, sharing that she is now ready to live “fully and authentically” after a year of personal growth since filming RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World.
In an exclusive statement, Fontana explained to PinkNews that while filming the series she identified publicly as non-binary because she “wasn’t fully ready” to open up about her trans journey.
“Identifying as non-binary was a beautiful and important part of my journey toward truly finding myself,” she said. “Now, I feel completely ready to be open and transparent.”
Fontana shared that returning to screens meant wanting to show audiences her most honest self, adding: “I gave you my most true, authentic self on Drag Race. Now it’s time to give you my most true, authentic self outside of it.”
‘I have always been she/her’
In a video message, Fontana said she has spent the past year reflecting and looking “deeper inside myself than ever before” before reaching clarity about her identity.
“I am a transgender woman,” she said, adding that she has “always been she/her” and is now openly embracing her truth.
She described her experience as her “soul finding home in my body”, after decades of searching and self-exploration.
Fontana emphasised that her previous identification as non-binary was not a concealment, but a necessary and affirming stage of self-discovery.
“It helped me explore. It helped me question. It helped me grow,” she explained, noting that her understanding of herself became stronger over time.

The performer revealed she has begun her transition and is currently navigating the healthcare system in Sweden, including weekly therapy. She also opened up about the long waiting periods for trans healthcare.
Fontana said she had not originally planned to discuss her transition so publicly, but that speaking about it “came out naturally” during a recent television appearance because it’s such an integral part of who she is.
She hopes that sharing her story will help foster visibility and safe spaces for others, particularly at a time when trans rights remain under intense public debate.
Thanking her fans for their continued support, Fontana added that she feels a deep responsibility to use her platform to uplift the trans community and those still finding their way.
