The Sims Mobile app has been taken off app stores ahead of a planned sunset for the game in January 2026.
The news about the app, a favourite amongst queer gamers, was announced by Electronic Arts on Sunday (19 October) and then on social media a day later. In a blog post EA explained the plan for the next few months including event rollouts and the eventual server shut down in the new year.
“Hey Simmers, We have some sad news today,” The Sims Mobile X/Twitter account posted on Monday (20 October) “After seven years and more than 50 updates, The Sims Mobile is releasing its final update,” the post said confirming the game will go offline on 20 January 2026 at 1:59 PM UTC.
The company has said that with the final update all players have been granted “to help them make the most of this time. This should make it easier to complete projects and enjoy the last few months of play.”

We have some sad news today. After seven years and more than 50 updates, The Sims Mobile is releasing its final update. From January 20, 2026, at 1:59 PM UTC, TSM will no longer be accessible to play and will be sunset.

All in app purchases have been disabled though users can still use their remaining in-game currencies. The post also said The Sims Mobile app would be deleted from all app stores on 21 October stopping new players from downloading the game, though current players would be unaffected.
“We’re deeply grateful for the love and passion you have all poured into TSM. Thank you for your support, dedication, and creativity,” the statement reads. “Thank you for sharing this journey with us.”
A longer blog post detailed the remaining events to be rolled out (including one just days before the game is due to go offline). UK Apple Store users can currently still access The Sims FreePlay app.
The Sims 4 remains functional and as popular as ever, however. The Verge reports that ‘Project Rene’, a new chapter for the EX property, is also still on the horizon though is reportedly still in development.

Fans of The Sims have expressed concern that LGBTQ+ content could disappear romantically the game following EA being bought out by an investor consortium that includes the Saudi Arabian-run Public Investment Fund.
The franchise has become a figurehead for expression and diversity within gaming, with features and expansions covering everything from polyamory to sexuality customisation to the ability for players to create transgender or disabled Sims.
Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA, has issued a statement saying the company’s “values” will “remain unchanged”, but did not mention The Sims specifically.
