Online chatter sparked by a viral tweet has sparked a rumour that Millie Bobby Brown donated $1,000,000 (£750,000) to the LGBTQ+ community to “find a cure”.

X/Twitter account Drop Pop tweeted on Sunday (26 October) that the Stranger Things star had handed over the small fortune, supposedly writing: “‘I hope they find a cure.” The post has attracted more than 230,000 likes.

However, the X account is a parody and its bio reveals that “all content is satirical and not factual”. There are no official reports of Brown making such a donation or statement.

Over the years, social media has often been flooded with memes portraying Brown as a homophobe.

The posts, which typically involved users adding fake anti-LGBTQ+ quotes on to images of the star, are all part of the “Millie Bobby Brown is homophobic” meme that first appeared in 2018 and led to her shutting her X account.

She has not returned to the platform since, except to tweet “Hi, I missed you,” the following year.

Brown has in fact been a vocal LGBTQ+ ally since shooting to fame in the Netflix sci-fi show in 2016. She has regularly denounced bullying and supported Stranger Things character Will Byers, who fans speculated was gay before it was confirmed by actor Noah Schnapp.

Three years ago, in an interview with Variety, she said she sees no reason for Will to label his sexuality, and that it’s “OK not to know”.

“Can I just say, it’s 2022 and we don’t have to label things,” she explained.

“I think what’s really nice about Will’s character is that he’s just a human being going through his own personal demons and issues.

“So many kids out there don’t know, and that’s OK. That’s OK to not know. And that’s OK not to label things.”

Fans have called for an end to the insulting meme in the wake of Schnapp himself coming out as gay in 2023.
