KATSEYE have tackled an awkward viral moment involving Mariah Carey head on, and in doing so proclaimed, “We love the gays!”
It all started with the group attending the MTV Video Music Awards in September, where they were asked for their favourite Mariah Carey music video. That night the “Fantasy” singer was honoured with the Vanguard Award for her contributions to music.
The simple question left the girls of KATSEYE – Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae – stumped, with the group clinging to Lara’s answer of either “Obsessed” or “My All.”
Now the band has shared a new music video for their song “Gabriela” which sees each member of the band recreate an iconic Mariah look. The band are asked the same question as before, this time by Bowen Yang, before showing off their looks.
After a lengthy intro, the video then switches to “Gabriela” for which the band are all dressed in rainbow tank tops, white shorts, and black boots harking back to Mariah’s Rainbow album cover look.
The band wore these looks while capturing social content. One video shared to Instagram sees the band asked, “What is your message to the gays?” The band members declare, “We love the gays!” before screaming, cheering, and making heart shapes with their hands.

KATSEYE was formed in 2023 via the YouTube reality competition series Dream Academy. The band’s first single, “Debut” was released in 2024, which was followed by a Netflix documentary about the band’s formation.
They released their debut EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong) last year and then the more recently-released Beautiful Chaos. In April, “Gnarly” became the band’s first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Earlier this year, Lara and Megan came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community. The band as a whole has also demonstrated its support of drag and the trans community. In “Mean Girls” they included a shoutout to the “T girls and all the in-between girls”.
