NBC has dropped Snoop Dogg‘s New Year’s Eve special with the rapper indicating the event could happen in 2026 instead.

The broadcaster announced Snoop Dogg’s New Year’s Eve, a two-hour event slated to be “packed with unforgettable music, iconic performances and surprise artist collaborations,” in May. And while no performers had yet been announced, it’s been confirmed that the special has been cancelled.

Deadline reported the news on Wednesday (5 November). In a statement Snoop Dogg said, “Sometimes the calendar gets in the way of the celebration, which is why my NBC family and I decided this winter was time for us all to focus on the Olympics.

“But don’t worry, we’ll party together bigger and better later in 2026. Ya dig,” said Snoop Dogg who is continuing to work with NBC on the 2026 Winter Olympics as well as coaching on The Voice.

Snoop Dogg’s anti-LGBTQ+ comments

While NBC has not publicly commented on the reason for the cancellation of the New Year’s special, it has come in the wake of negative comments Snoop Dogg made in August about LGBTQ+ representation in TV and film.

Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, the “Gin and Juice” rapper said he watched 2022’s Lightyear with his grandson, who began asking him questions about how a lesbian couple could have had a baby.

The rapper said the inclusion of the queer character Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) left him “scared” to take his grandchildren to the movies.

The rapper was widely criticised for the comments, and appeared to issue an apology of sorts via a comment posted by his official Instagram account. However, a representative later claimed that the comment was not posted by Snoop Dogg.

Snoop Dogg then made amends by teaming up with the LGBTQ+ media monitoring organisation GLAAD and with queer musician Jeremy Beloate to create a new song “Love Is Love” which featured in the rapper’s animated children’s series, Doggyland.“

During a chat with Beloate Snoop Dogg said, “Being able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it be two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key.”
