Pokémon GO’s November Community Day Pokémon is a bisexual icon

Toucannon is Pokémon GO's November Community Day Pokémon (The Pokémon Company)

Get your Poké balls ready gaymers, because Pokémon GO‘s next Community Day is one for the bisexual trainers.

Nearly a decade on from its release, Pokémon GO remains ever popular with Pokémon fans around the world and millions of trainers log in to the augmented reality (AR) mobile game on the daily to try and catch ’em all.

On 30 November, the game’s next Community Day will feature Generation VII normal/flying type Pokémon Pikipek, the Woodpecker Pokémon, which is from the Alola region. Pikipek evolves into Trumbeak, which then evolves into its final form Toucannon.

In Pokémon GO, Community Days are a monthly event which see a specific Pokémon spawn on the game’s map at an increased rate for a set period of time.

Alongside giving trainers a chance to up the amount of candies they have for that specific Pokémon – vital for powering up and evolving – the increased spawn rate means you also have a boosted chance of encountering the much sought-after shiny variants, and the event also provides trainers with an exclusive attack as a reward for evolving the spotlighted Pokémon to its final form.

Now, you might be wondering why we are saying this Pokémon is one for the bi girlies, guys and theys – it’s because of the very cute colours of its shiny version.

Toucannon, in its normal form, very closely resembles a toucan in real-life and similarly sports a beak in the colours of red, orange and yellow. However, in its shiny form Toucannon has a beak which is pink, purple and blue – the exact same colours as the bisexual flag.

It did not take people long to clock the similarities when the Pokémon was originally released, with many LGBTQ+ Pokémon fans declaring that they absolutely needed the Pokémon’s shiny in their collections.

Over the years since, bi folks and allies alike have dubbed shiny Toucannon as “Bicannon” and a “bicon” – aka a bi icon.

“NO I NEED TO SHINY HUNT THIS RIGHT NOW,” one user wrote on a Reddit thread discussing the Pokémon.

“NEW FAVORITE POKEMON,” a second declared.

“Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird Bi bird,” a third said.

“I never realized I wanted a shiny more in my life now. Time to go shiny hunting,” another said, while a different user wrote: “TIME TO GO SHINY HUNTING BOYS”.

As a huge multi-media and multi-decade franchise, Pokémon has long been popular with queer folks who have connected with the human characters and Pokémon alike – think the campy baddies that are the cross-dressing Jessie and James of Team Rocket or Pokémon Go team leader Blanche who uses they/them pronouns.

Toucannon is certainly not the first Pokémon to have queer vibes in the franchise, as genderless, shape-shifting Generation I Pokémon Ditto – which can breed with any other Pokémon (very pansexual, right?) – is a firm favourite of gaymers.
