Tickets for Pride the Musical, based on the hit film, have gone on sale. The show will have preview performances in Cardiff before moving to London.
Pride the Musical will reunite film director Matthew Warchus and screenwriter Stephen Beresford, to tell the true story that inspired the film. Set in the summer of 1984, it follows queer activists from Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who helped a small pit village in South Wales where the workforce was on strike.
The 2014 film starred George MacKay, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Andrew Scott but the cast of the stage musical is yet to be announced.
‘I can’t wait for audiences to experience its power’
“It was one of the greatest joys and privileges of my career to direct the film version of Pride. I’m so excited to be working alongside Stephen again to bring this hugely emotional and inspiring true story to the stage and let it sing,” Warchus said.
Beresford added: “The soaring, epic nature of this story seemed tailor-made for musical theatre.”
And the director of the National Theatre, Indhu Rubasingham, said: “When I heard that Matthew and Stephen were adapting their beloved film Pride as a stage musical, I knew instantly that I wanted it to be here.
“The Dorfman is an intimate, flexible theatre, renowned for new writing and for challenging expectations. The world premiere of Pride will push the limits of what is possible in this space, both joyful and disrupting. I can’t wait for audiences to experience its power.’
Preview performances are being staged at the Sherman Theatre, in Cardiff, from 31 March to 18 April before the show transfers to the Dorfman stage from 11 June to 12 September.
