The Dancing with the Stars finale is going to be a tough one, with Dylan Efron and “proud” LGBTQ+ ally Robert Irwin among those hoping to lift the mirrorball trophy.
On Tuesday (18 November), the remaining celebrities took part in a Prince-themed semi-final. Influencers Alix Earle and Whitney Leavitt, gymnast Jordan Chiles, and Dynasty star Elaine Hendrix were looking to make it to the final alongside The Traitors US winner Efron and conservationist and LGBTQ+ ally Irwin.
In the end, Leavitt and her partner, Mark Ballas, the son of Strictly Come Dancing’s Shirley, had to leave the show despite a track record of high scores.
Irwin, following in sister Bindi’s footsteps on the show, got a perfect score for his first dance, a jive, and was one point short of repeating that feat in the second round with a Viennese waltz. That left him with an overall score of 59 points.
Speaking to the press after the show, Irwin said he was a “wreck” when it was announced that he’d made it to final. Later on, he said he’d “never forget this experience”.
Commenting on Irwin’s jive, Efron, the younger brother of High School Musical star Zac, wrote on social media: “I watched twice and smiled so much my cheeks hurt.”
Efron himself scored 27 for a tango and 28 for his cha-cha-cha, totalling the lowest overall score of the night. Posting on his own profile after the show, he shared footage of himself and dance partner Daniella Karagach falling to the floor after learning they’d made it through.
The final is set to take place on Tuesday (25 November). The couples will perform three dances during the three-hour spectacle.
