‘Is Joe Keery bisexual?’ is a question a lot of people are asking after a slightly confusing moment in one of the Stranger Things star’s recent interviews. And while we’d certainly be happy for that to be the case, it may not be the “coming out” moment that people think it is.
Joe Keery is reprising his role as Steve Harrington in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. He stars alongside Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton and more in the final season of the show set to debut on 26 November.
The actor and singer (he performs musically as Djo) was in London recently promoting the series when he appeared on Hits Radio alongside Heaton, Dyer, and Jamie Campbell Bower, who play Jonathan Byers, Nancy Wheeler, and the villain, Vecna, respectively.

During the interview, the cast was asked about their on-screen characters crushes. Keery brought up Disney’s animated classic, Robin Hood, which famously sees the characters portrayed as animals. Both Robin Hood and Maid Marian are foxes.
In response to Keery, Campbell Bower asks “the original?,” while Dyer also asks, “The fox?” Keery responds, “both of them,” though it’s not clear which he’s answering.
By “the original” we think Campbell Bower means the 1938 Errol Flynn version, The Adventures of Robin Hood, even though Keery was talking about the animated Robin Hood. And Dyer seems to have been asking which fox Keery meant: Robin Hood or Maid Marian.
Keery’s answer, appropriately, works for both. Both Errol Flynn and the animated Robin Hood and Maid Marian are considered crush-worthy by many.

Ultimately, it’s a bit confusing as everyone’s talking over one another and it’s not clear who Keery is answering. And we’d gladly welcome Keery, who’s donated money from his tour to LGBTQ+ charities, into the community, especially after that scene in season four with the Upside Down’s bat creatures…
But some people have taken Keery’s response to mean he was answering Dyer and saying he had a crush on both Robin Hood and Maid Marian. And, to be fair, having a crush on both characters as well as people’s reactions are perfectly understandable.
“Joe Keery softlaunching his bisexuality by talking about a cartoon crush is exactly how I came out to my family years ago so as a fellow bi guy this is very beautiful to me to be honest,” wrote one person on X/Twitter.

Someone else argued it didn’t mean he’s necessarily bisexual and that he could be queer adding, “nothing straight about it.” Another fan shared, “thank u Jesus,” to the speculation.
In the interview, Keery also admitted a crush on Lola Bunny from Space Jam. “I remember being like ‘Excuse me?!'” he said of that crush, indicating the surprise he had when he first saw her rather seductive form.
Dyer agreed Lola was “hot” while Heaton asked if Dyer had previously said she’d had a crush on Yu-Gi-Oh‘s Yami in his Pharaoh form. Both Keery and Heaton seemed to agree with that crush, Heaton calling Yami “hot pharaoh.”
Campbell Bower added he was “a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer growing up,” and had crushes on “multiple characters.” Honestly, same.
Stranger Things season five will debut in three parts. The first four episodes will stream from Wednesday 26 November. The next three will be available on Christmas Day, with the finale available on New Year’s Eve.
