A new interview with Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has left some fans thinking they’ve cracked the code for the ending of the final season.
Speaking to Variety, Duffer revealed one of his favourite moments of the show. “The first scene we shot, which was the scene with the kids playing Dungeons & Dragons in the basement. That’s the first time we had them in a room, in a set performing with cameras running. Just watching that come together was a massive relief.
“Even though it was 10 years ago, I’ll never forget that moment.”
Dungeons & Dragons is a table-top, role-playing game. It involves playing as a character each player creates and embarking upon adventures within a fantasy setting.
So, could Stranger Things have taken place in such a game? Will we find out the entire series was, in fact, just a Dungeons & Dragons campaign all along? Some fans think so.
Many have also pointed out that Dungeons’ lore has been an integral element of Netflix’s hit show and the monsters in the show are influenced by the game. Mike, played by Finn Wolfhard, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Will (Noah Schnapp) are seen playing it in that early shot.
‘It will ruin the entire show’
“Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s the last scene in the series,” one person wrote on X/Twitter.
Someone else said: “It will genuinely ruin the entire show if they pull some dumbass ‘it was all a [Dungeons & Dragon’s] campaign s**t. Ten years of following character change and growth only to be told, ‘Yeah none of that happened’. I am begging them to not do that.”
Another fan proclaimed: “If the final scene reveals they’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons that whole time, everybody’s dying.”
Others warned: “This could go down as the worst ending for a TV show ever,” and, “I’ll flip all this s**t over.”
Many of the original Stranger Things cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, as Eleven and Winona Ryder and David Harbour will also be back for the final time.
The fifth and final season of will consist of eight episodes, released in three parts. The first four episodes drop on Wednesday (November 26). Three more will air on Christmas Day, followed by a final two-hour special on New Year’s Eve.
Each set will be available from 1am UK time, 5pm Pacific. Find out more times here.
