Ahead of the start of season five of Stranger Things, the show’s creators have teased that the final episodes of the sci-fi horror series will feature “the most violent death”.

The first four episodes of the closing season are due to drop on Netflix on Wednesday (26 November) with the rest due to come out over the Christmas and New Year period.

And, now, the Duffer brothers, Ross and Matt have spoken to The Times about shooting the whole show.

Although the new series won’t be as violent as past ones, it will include “the most violent death of any season”, they revealed.

Not even hinting at who would suffer such a terrible fate, Matt said: “Every character’s ending needed to feel right. That was more important than providing the fans with the ending they’re hoping for.”

After watching trailers for season five, fans have been speculating about who was likely to make it out alive and who might not be so lucky.

One of the favourites to meet a grisly end appears to be Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery. Fans have highlighted his absence from some of the more-recent trailers and promo, while others pointed to his storyline as an indicator that he will not make it through.

Steve started out as the popular high-school guy, dating Nancy. However, their relationship ended and he has become not only a member of the gang fighting Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and his forces, but a leader. If he sacrificed himself for the greater good, and maybe even for his ex in particular, no one would be hugely surprised.

One shot of a tearful Nancy in the trailers, washing blood from her hands, provides more possible evidence.

But, given the central role he’s played from the very beginning, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) could be another one set to meet his maker, fans fear. Abducted into the Upside Down in season one and later manipulated as a pawn of Vecna, he may now hold the key to finally saving the town of Hawkins.

Many of the original Stranger Things cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, as Eleven, and Winona Ryder and David Harbour will also be back for the final time.

The final season will consist of eight episodes, released in three parts. The first four drop on Wednesday (November 26). Three more will air on Christmas Day, followed by a final two-hour special on New Year’s Eve.

Each set will be available from 1am UK time, 5pm Pacific. Find out more times here.
