“Proud” LGBTQ+ ally, Robert Irwin, has won Dancing with the Stars 10 years after his sister, Bindi, won the ballroom competition.

Irwin, the son of the late Steve Irwin, was crowned the winner and claimed the DWTS mirrorball trophy at the conclusion to Tuesday’s (24 November) grand finale. He had been competing against influencer Alix Earle, gymnast Jordan Chiles, Dynasty star Elaine Hendrix, and The Traitors US winner Dylan Efron.

The finale saw the celebrities perform three dances – Judges’ Choice, Instant Dance and Freestyle. Irwin scored 29 out of 30 and then full marks in each round, capping off a great season for the photographer.

As reported by the BBC, the 21-year-old broke down after his final dance as he paid tribute to his late father, who was killed by a stingray in 2006. “I really wish he could be here,” he said.

Reacting to the win on Instagram, Irwin shared an image of himself and Witney Carson, his dance partner, and wrote, “Thank you for letting me live out this dream.” He also shared the moment his win was announced.

Ahead of the finale, Irwin posted a video on Instagram showing a younger version of himself being interviewed. He’s asked if he’d ever be up for DWTS to which he replies: “Definitely, I would love to! That would be so much fun.”

The video then cuts to a montage of clips from the series of him performing various dances. Set to Avicii’s “The Nights,” the video also includes a clip of Irwin praising his “amazing” sister, Bindi, when she was on the show – and won – 10 years ago.

In the caption Irwin wrote, “Dreams can come true.” Carson responded, “Well I’m crying again… love you so much. This is YOUR TIME! Take hold of it, and enjoy every moment!” Bindi added, “Cheering for you always!!! You got this.”

Carson’s comment references another video Irwin shared on social media prior to the finale. Sharing a compilation of behind-the-scenes clips Irwin said he had “entered this experience to live out a dream,” and was leaving “with another big sister,” meaning Carson.
