Christmas cheer is coming to hundreds of trans youngsters early, as Trans Secret Santa returns for another year of festive gift-giving.

The UK-based annual community project, run by Trans+ Solidarity Alliance, aims to spread trans joy during the holiday season by giving gifts to trans young people.

Young people will receive a free present from major brands and trans creators as part of the scheme, with organisers saying they hope to be able to give out 1000 gifts in total.

Trans people under 25 can apply to receive a free gift through the application form on the organisation’s website. Applications close on Sunday (30 November) evening.

Trans Secret Santa UK organiser Octavian Starr said the campaign is more important than ever in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling on the 2010 Equality Act’s definition of a woman, which could result in what amounts to a trans bathroom ban.

“We believe every trans+ young person deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and supported, especially during a season that can feel especially difficult,” he said. “This year has been horrific for the trans community in the UK, and we all need a glimmer of hope.”

The end-of-year initiative first began in 2022 as a way to spread festive joy to trans young people without homes or supportive families. It sent over 700 gifts in its first year alone.

Now in its third year, organisers are hoping to break their record by giving gifts to over 1000 trans youth.

“This is exactly the kind of gift I would have loved when I was younger,” Starr said. “Being able to offer that joy to the next generation is something we’re deeply grateful for – it’s healing, hopeful, and a reminder that none of us are alone.”

Supporters of the campaign can donate to its fundraiser, which has seen over £5,200 raised at the time of reporting.

Starr told PinkNews each donation helps to send a present to another trans young person in need of support “at a time where it really makes a difference.”

“Whether you are a young person signing up, kindly donating to cover gifts, or simply spreading the word – you’re helping to create a little more warmth and magic for trans youth this winter. We’ve already had hundreds of young people sign up from across the country, but there’s two days left for more to join us.”
