Story about cis men getting breast reductions goes viral – and everyone’s making the same point

An article about cis men getting breast reduction surgery has gone viral, and everyone is having the same reaction. 

Anti-trans pundits have continually raised their voices against gender-affirming treatments, despite the fact studies have shown that there’s scant evidence reporting that trans people regret their gender-affirming care, including top surgery. 

In fact, top surgery has been found to dramatically improve the lives of trans people, according to a study, and even heterosexual men are undergoing the procedure to improve their mental wellbeing. 

An article published by the New York Post on Wednesday (3 December) shares the experiences of cisgender men who have had the surgery in a bid to feel their best. 

‘It changed my life’

“It changed my life,” Brian Lewis Gonzalez, who underwent the surgery, told the publication. “I had to get used to walking with my chest out and having confidence. Before, it felt like I was carrying around a big bag of rocks – that’s what my gynecomastia was.”

Gynecomastia – an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men – is expected to impact half of all men at some point in their lives, with Dr. Claudia Kim, chief medical officer and lead cosmetic surgeon at New Look New Life in Manhattan, confirming that since 2020 there’s been a “steep increase” in men going ahead with the surgery. 

But on social media, everyone is having the same reaction: pointing out that the surgery is literally the same as gender-affirming top surgery – the exact procedure so many right-wingers oppose.

One person reposted the article, captioning it, simply, “Gender-affirming top surgery”.

Another reader referenced the barriers trans people face in accessing the procedure, writing: “I think we need to have long interviews where these guys have to explain that they are actually guys, and have 2 psychologists agree to it. wouldn’t want them doing anything irreversible they might regret. did we check if they are autistic?” 

Someone else parodied a common anti-trans dogwhistle, writing: “So sad they were groomed into mutilating their bodies :(“

“But when trans men do it suddenly it’s a big problem,” another reader wrote, while someone else commented, “oh so when cis men are getting their breasts removed it’s just popular surgery among guys?” 

The comments rightly call out the hypocrisy of those opposed to gender-affirming care, which has shown time and time again to have incredibly low regret rates.
