The stars of Netflix’s hit gay military drama Boots have responded after it was axed by the streamer after just one season.

News of the cancellation was shared last night (15 December) by Deadline, with the publication reporting that Netflix had opted not to move forward with further seasons of the coming-of-age series, despite it scoring a very impressive 90 per cent critic and fan approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Boots’ leading men Miles Heizer and Max Parker are yet to comment on the show being binned, a number of the show’s supporting cast members have responded to the news.

Writing on Instagram Stories, actress Ana Ayora, who played Captain Denise Fajardo in the series, said that the cancellation marked “the end of our mission:”.

“With great honor, deep gratitude and heart, I salute you all for supporting us and this beautiful much needed story. Captain Fajardo, this experience, these humans, this opportunity expanded my life. I am forever changed,” she added.

Blake Burt, who played John Bowman, said that it was “difficult” and “unfortunate” that the show hadn’t been renewed, and apologised to its fans.

“I’m sorry we won’t be doing a round 2 for #BOOTS but thank you all for the love and support throughout this show. I made family for life, and we made something beautiful,” he wrote on Instagram Stories.

“Sometimes these things happen and it’s out of our control, but I hope this show touched your heart and you find that strength deep in your soul to always overcome, believe in yourself, but ultimately lead with love no matter what.”

He added that while he “wished” that he and the cast could “go back and have a round two”, he was immensely grateful and proud of his co-stars, including Heizer, Liam Oh and Max Parker.

Dom D. Goodman, who played Nash, shared a screenshot of the show’s Rotten Tomatoes’ score adding: “One for the books.”

“I gained so much from this show; new brothers, new understanding of my own family history with the Marines and a taste of what I’m capable of as an actor. This job pushed me, it grew me and I’m grateful to have gotten such an amazing experience,” he continued.

Actor Angus O’Brien, who played Thaddeus Beau Sterling Hicks, thanked the show’s cast for their “love and care” as someone who walked onto the set “newly sober, nervous as hell, and trying to figure out this next part of my life”.

“All I can say right now is thank you,” he added. “To friends and strangers who watched and shared a sweet word, your kindness has meant the world to me.”

Boots followed Heizer as Cameron Cope, who spontaneously joins his friend Ray McAffey (played by Oh) by signing up to the U.S. Marine Corps. Set in the 1990s, the show followed Cameron’s experience as a queer recruit at a time when being gay in the military was illegal. While undergoing the brutal training of the boot camp, Cameron and the other recruits slowly discover their true selves and build bonds along the way.

Despite being based on a true story and the 2016 memoirThe Pink Marine by Greg Cope White, the Pentagon slammed Netflix for the series, dubbing it as “woke garbage”. Shortly afterwards, the series soared up the Netflix charts.

White reacted to the cancellation news by sharing a comment by writer James Duke Mason, who described the cancellation as “so sad and disappointing”.

“Thanks for the love of my story,” White wrote on Instagram Stories, alongside a broken heart and angry-faced emoji.

It found a legion of fans and cemented itself as a part of 2025 popular culture, with several publications listing it as one of the best TV shows of the year.

Online, fans have raged about the cancellation, with one criticising Netflix for cutting shows “before they even get the chance” to thrive.
