LGBTQ+ pop icon Boy George has shared comforting words in response to a mother’s moving social media post about her trans son.
On Tuesday (6 January), the Karma Chameleon singer responded to a moving repost of a mother’s story.
According to the repost, the mother shared that following her 17-year-old son coming out trans, his father changed the locks on his bedroom door, forcing him to sleep on the coach. In a bid to support her son she crocheted a trans Pride flag blanket.
“The stitches aren’t perfect because my hands shake now from the stress, from lying in bed next to a man I don’t recognise anymore. My son watches me work on it sometimes, doesn’t say anything, just sits there picking at his nails the way he does when he’s trying not to cry. Last night he asked if I was making it for someone and I told him yeah, for the bravest person I know. He figured it out then. Started sobbing,” she wrote.
She concluded that she and her son had found an apartment that they will move to, away from the father.
“His dad can keep the house and his hatred. We’re choosing us. This blanket is going to be the first thing in our new place, draped over our second hand couch, proof that someone saw him and loved exactly who he is. We’re going to make it,” the post continued.
‘I am just glad to be here’
In response, Boy George shared an important message for parents: “Love your kids no matter [what] because what you do [for] them truly matters.”
His response read: “Sadly though, the only confusion is in the father’s head. My dad, was a man’s man and he loved me. I have all his best and worst traits. I don’t blame him for any of that. I am just glad to be here. Love your kids no matter [what] because what you do [for] them truly matters.”
The star’s comment has been viewed more than 14,000 times, and the post has received comments echoing a similar sentiment.
‘Choosing love is always winning’
One comment read: “A mother choosing her child over fear. A blanket stitched with love saying, you are seen, you are safe. That small apartment will hold more warmth than that house ever did. Choosing love is always winning.”
Someone else commented: “Love is more than what we say. It’s in the care we take to build safe spaces and show up for each other every day.”
In his 2023 autobiography “Karma”, Boy George opened up about the way he came out as gay to his parents – not through words, but via his interior design choices.
Before he formed Culture Club in 1981, the singer was a part of the New Romantic movement. He joined a squat in Warren Street in central London to build a new life alongside other creatives, frequenting the same circles as artists like Princess Julia and Leigh Bowery.
Here, Boy George decorated his bedroom with numerous pictures of men. And, while he was out, his parents decided to pay him a visit, leaving him an endearing note which read: “Nice wallpaper. Love you, son.”
He wrote elsewhere in his autobiography: “My dad announced my ‘homosexuality’ to my brothers, David and Richard, in his Bedford van. Turning down the radio, he said: ‘You know your brother’s a bit funny’.”
