Not since Elphaba’s infamous cardigan have Wicked fans been so confounded, as Wicked: For Good has managed to pick up zero Oscar nominations.
The bad news was delivered on Thursday (22 January) when the nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards were announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman.
Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the body which awards the Oscars, decided not to nominate either Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for their role as Elphaba/’The Wicked Witch of the West’ and Glinda the Good. Both actresses were up for the honour last year for 2024’s Wicked.
Also going unrecognised by the Academy are the two new original songs in Wicked: For Good, “The Girl in the Bubble” and “No Place Like Home”. Both were composed by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked‘s original composer.
“Ariana and Cynthia you both deserve better,” wrote one upset fan on X/Twitter.
“Wicked not even getting a costume design, makeup and hairstyling, or original song nomination is kinda insane,” added another. Someone else echoed this saying: “Wicked: For Good not getting a nomination for Costume Design, Production Design or Hair & Makeup will never not sit right with me.”
Someone else wrote: “That’s it I’m skipping the Oscars this year,” while someone else typed: “This is insane!”
And while it was bad news for some, it was very good news for others. Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror starring Michael B. Jordan, has broken the record for the most nominations in a single year with 16.
Also a big contender this year is the Leonardo DiCaprio led One Battle After Another as well as Marty Supreme, and Frankenstein.
Ethan Hawke is also up for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his turn as lyricist Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. Hart is reported to have been gay despite proposing to women.
US comedian Conan O’Brien will host The Oscars on 15 March.
