Diplo has shared his reason for frequenting gay bars and it’s a simple and unavoidable truth: “They’re, like, actually having fun.”
The “not not gay” Grammy winner, 47, recently joined The Set List podcast with Carter Gregory where he discussed his work on songs such as “Paper Planes,” “Look At Me Now,” and “Electricity”.
Gregory told the audience that he only sees Diplo in a “partying capacity”, which the DJ and producer denied. “And I only see him at gay bars,” Gregory added, which Diplo confirmed was true.

“The gay bars are the only real events I like to go to in L.A. because [gay people] don’t give a f*** and they’re, like, actually having fun,” Diplo explained. “L.A. is a pretty flat city for energy,” he added before mentioning one of his latest gigs at “hardcore” gay warehouse night, Pegasus.

The producer also mentioned DJing at the famous LA establishment The Abbey and performing with Dua Lipa, which he said was “one of the craziest nights out”.
After bring praised by Gregory as “an amazing ally” to the LGBTQ+ community, Diplo echoed previous comments when he reflected that “a lot of gay, black men” had a hand in defining the genres of music he loves, especially house music. “A lot of gay men are able to just be way more free and crazy when it comes to music,” Diplo continued. “It’s always been that way, it’s just, I think, the freedom to experiment, you know?”
Diplo, who has worked with artists like Kylie Minogue and Orville Peck, also said: “I think a lot of gay men are able to just push the envelope a lot more than straight guys, and straight guys kind of follow suit or they mix it up, and now, you know, everything’s a mix-up, but I think when it comes to partying, gay people are always on the forefront of what’s going on.”

The producer recalled seeing Charli XCX perform in Brooklyn on the brat tour and concluded that gay people are “way louder” than other audiences.
In 2023, Diplo went viral after opening up about his experiences with other men in an interview. The DJ has also shut down speculation about his sexuality in the past, writing in 2019 that “masculinity is a prison” in response to a Twitter user.
