A dating site created to normalise polyamory has partnered with an astrologer to reveal the star signs that are most likely to struggle with monogamous relationships.
In the UK and US, monogamy remains the dominant relationship structure. Monogamy refers to a relationship in which both individuals are exclusively sexually, romantically and emotionally involved with the other.
However, studies have shown that non-monogamous relationships are on the rise.
Polyamory or ethical non-monogamy (ENM) is loosely defined as the practice of being romantically involved with multiple, consenting partners. Polygamy is the practice of marrying multiple spouses and it’s illegal in many places, including the UK and the US.
Sister Wives, a dating and matchmaking platform for polyamory and other forms of ENM, partnered with astrologer Inbaal Honigman to reveal which signs are more tempted to go against the grain of traditional dating.
Gemini (20 May to 19 June)
“Geminis often find traditional, one-on-one relationships restrictive, as they thrive on spontaneous and lively energy. Polyamorous relationships tend to give Geminis the freedom to keep things fresh and exciting,” Honigman, who described the sign as being “naturally curious,” explained.
Scorpio (22 October to 20 November)
Honigman said: “Known to be intense and mysterious, many Scorpios are sexually experimental and passionate in nature. Their exploratory side makes them open to exploring multiple partners, once they trust those in their inner circle. While they often fear vulnerability, once a Scorpio lets others in, they commit and get attached extremely fast. They need partners who are all in.”
Sagittarius (21 November to 20 December)
“Unafraid of change”, Sagittarius is a sign that loves to “explore the unknown” and be “curious” about understanding how the world works.
“These adventurous sides mean they’ll say yes to (almost) anything in the name of freedom. For them, poly-relationships are about expanding life experiences, meeting people from all walks of life and avoiding being tied down,” Honigman shared.
Aries (20 March to 18 April)
Although “keen to do things their own way”, Aries are open to “throwing themselves into new experiences without fear”.
“Because they are easily bored, Aries are attracted to people who can keep up with them, and poly-relationships let them keep things lively without feeling boxed in. Their cheeky, playful and flirty nature helps them thrive with multiple partners,” Honigman said.
Leo (22 July to 21 August)
Leos are open to all admiration. Honigman explained: “Whoever wants to admire them is alright by the Leo, even if it’s several at once. Naturally energetic and passionate, they fall for partners who are equally enthusiastic. Multiple partners offer multiple sources of adoration, and they’re more than happy to share.”
Capricorn (21 December to 18 January)
Honigman noted that Capricorns are also more adventurous when it comes to relationships.
“While Capricorns keep their distance initially, after putting in some effort, they can become sentimental and loyal to their partners. Wealthy and ambitious, they can handle the logistics of multiple relationships to maintain several satisfied partners,” she said.
Virgo (22 August to 21 September)
Virgos are also open to “less traditional relationships”. Honigman said: “Thoughtful and practical, it takes a while for Virgos to fall in love – they take boundaries, communication and consent seriously. Attracted to a wide variety of people, Virgos find beauty in less traditional relationships.”
According to the dating site and Honigman, the signs that prefer monogamous relationships all seem to share traits of wanting balance, stability and simplicity.
Cancers (20 June to 21 July)
Cancers are noted to be the “least likely to thrive with multiple partners”.
“Cancers are single-family-minded and long for someone who is devoted only to them. They don’t like surprises, so having too many cooks can remove the comfort and stability they crave from a traditional relationship,” Honigman explained.
Pisces (18 February to 19 March)
Pisces “follow a close second” to Cancers due to their “sensitive nature and intuition,” which is “best suited for one partner”.
“Despite being inward-facing, they are romantic and seek relationships, so they will do almost whatever their partner expects. But they’re generally one-on-one by nature.”
Libra (22 September to 21 October)
Being ruled by Venus, Libra a sign that “loves to love” and thrives on “harmony” and “enjoying the courtship process.
“While they are an open-minded air sign, and some Libras can make multiple partners happy, they balance one relationship well due to simplicity and attention,” Honigman said.
Aquarius (19 January to 17 February)
Aquarius is a “peaceful sign” that “loves people for their mind”.
“However, they do value their independence and sometimes struggle with the emotional maintenance that poly-relationships require,” Honigman noted.
Taurus (19 April to 19 May)
Taurus are “homebodies who want it all or nothing and no in-between”.
Honigman explained: “Taurus are usually satisfied with the way things are and tend to be committed long-term once they fall in love. They thrive in secure relationships and sometimes have a possessive streak, making poly-relationships more difficult.”
