US president Donald Trump has praised his “number one fan”, Nicki Minaj, for her “beautiful skin” in a bizarre Black History Month speech.
Despite failing to acknowledge the struggles Black Americans have faced in the National Black History Month proclamation, Trump has taken to praising the rapper in a bid to mark the commemorative month.
On Wednesday (18 February), during the White House Black History Month reception, Trump recalled Minaj’s visit to the Trump Accounts Summit on 28 January.
He said at the event: “Do we love Nicki Minaj? She was here a couple of weeks ago. So beautiful. Her skin, so beautiful. I said, ‘Nicki, so beautiful.’
“Her nails, her nails they’re like that long,” Trump said, indicating the length with his hands.
“I said, ‘Nicki, are they real?’ She said she didn’t want to get into that,” Trump added.
Taking to the stage at the January event, Minaj said: “I am probably the President’s number one fan, and that’s not going to change. And the hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more, it’s going to motivate all of us to support him more.”
She added: “We’re not going to let them get away with bullying him and you know the smear campaigns, it’s not going to work. He has a lot of force behind him and God is protecting him. Amen.
In November last year, Minaj, previously deemed an LGBTQ+ ally, shared a post from Trump about the “existential threat” faced by Christians in Nigeria. The rapper also said she had “a deep sense of gratitude” for Trump supporting Christianity.
More recently she’s continued her anti-LGBTQ+ push by targeting gay journalist Don Lemon after he reported on a Minnesota church service in the wake of the murder of Renee Good. Lemon, who is gay and married to real estate agent Tim Malone, later urged Minaj to “stop talking s*** for which [she] knows nothing about”.
