Actor Eric Dane has died aged 53, less than a year after he shared that he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
According to a statement released by his representatives, the actor passed away on 19 February. In his final days, he was surrounded by friends and family, including his “devoted” wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and his two daughters who were “the centre of his world”.
In April 2025, Dane publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement from his reps said.
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane was best known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy”, the hot plastic surgeon in Grey’s Anatomy who stirred up trouble in Seattle Grace Hospital with his arrival in season two, and quickly became a fan favourite.
Dane remained on the show as a series regular from seasons three to nine, and popped back for a guest spot in season 17.
Following his tenure on the ABC drama, Dane starred in Euphoria as Cal Jacobs, the queer and antagonistic father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate.
The show’s creator, Sam Levinson, shared a tribute to Dane following his passing. “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric,” he told Variety on 19 February. “Working with him was an honour. Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”
