Now that the entirety of season four of Bridgerton is out, one showrunner has weighed in on bisexual Benedict Bridgerton‘s (Luke Thompson) heartfelt coming-out scene.
Spoilers for Bridgerton season four incoming!
Though season four of the hit Netflix show follows Benedict and love interest Sophie (Yerin Ha), it’s been established that the Bridgerton brother is queer.
Benedict was confirmed to be queer in season three, which follows his relationships with both men and women. In the last season, he engaged in a tryst with Lady Tilley Arnold (Hannah New) and Paul Suarez (Lucas Aurelio).
Furthermore, in the first episode of season four, Benedict shares a kiss with another man. Then, in more recent episodes, Benedict clarified his sexuality to Sophie.
In the coming out scene, Benedict shares: “Society should not be allowed to dictate the rules of how one lives life. Or who one loves.”
He goes on to note: “I am capable of caring for you, just as I have cared for women I have known who are of the ton.
“Just as I have cared for some men whom I have known intimately. And I refuse to be at all ashamed about that.”
Sophie pauses to take in his statement. She then smiles and replies: “Love is always a thing to be proud of. The world needs more of it.”
The sweet moment sees the pair confess their love for each other
Speaking to Radio Times, showrunner Jess Brownell said it was so important to get the scene right.
‘That’s the only form of true love.’
“I think for those of us who identify as queer and are attracted to multiple genders, no matter who we end up with, we will always identify as queer, it’s a part of our identity.
“For Benedict to tell Sophie every part of himself and be completely embraced and loved for who he is, that’s the only form of true love.
“Any version of love where you are hiding a part of yourself or not being accepted for a part of yourself, that wouldn’t be the happily ever after that we wanted for Ben and Sophie.”
Brownell also added that sharing their true selves with each other breaks down boundaries between them.
“I felt like it was a beautiful moment for the two of them to see, acknowledge and accept each other.”
Benedict is not the only queer character in the Bridgerton universe. Brownell has previously said that Francesca (Hannah Dodd) will begin a gay relationship. The new season saw sparks fly between her and Michaela (Masali Baduza).
The end of season four set the stage for the next season to tackle the show’s first leading LGBTQ+ romance.
