U.S. Representative Dan Crenshaw was defeated by Steve Toth in the Republican primary for Texas‘s 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday (3 March), signalling a shift in the GOP as Toth positions himself as a more extreme candidate.
Crenshaw, known for leading efforts against gender-affirming care, garnered 39.3 percent of the votes compared to Toth’s 57.3 percent.
Crenshaw’s legislative initiatives included a federal ban on Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care for minors, which faced criticism from organisations like the ACLU.

Toth, a businessman and ordained minister, has represented the suburban Houston area as a Texas House member since 2019 and campaigned on a hardline conservative platform, aligning himself with the GOP’s MAGA wing.
He has previously also supported Texas legislation aimed at restricting gender-affirming care and social transitioning for minors.
With his victory, Toth advances to the general election in November.
