Donald Trump has branded Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico an “insult to Jesus” over his pro-trans stance.
The US president made the comment on Fox News host Brian Kilmeade’s radio show.
Kilmeade asked if Trump had decided whether to endorse attorney general Ken Paxton or incumbent senator John Cornyn – both Texas Republicans who oppose LGBTQ+ rights.
In response, Trump ranted about Talarico’s acceptance of trans people, even referencing a 2021 speech in which he claimed: “God is non-binary.”
“God is both masculine, feminine, and everything in between,” Talarico said, adding: “God is non-binary.”
Trump refused to confirm who he would endorse in the primary, but claimed the “good news” is that Talarico, who will face either Cornyn or Paxton for the US Senate seat this November, “is whacked out, with his six different forms of gender”.
He continued, referencing the 2021 speech: “The insult to Jesus. I mean, such an insult… He is so woke. He’s beyond woke. He’s actually, I think he’s grossly incompetent… When you see what this guy said about gender and about other topics…”
Trump added that his priority is backing someone who will get the Save America Act approved. The bill would require every American to provide documentary proof of citizenship to register or re-register to vote in federal elections.
Talarico, who won the democratic nomination for the Texas primaries in March, is a staunch LGBTQ+ ally. He has used his platform to voice support for the trans community, and previously said that he dreads every floor debate which attempts to ban life-saving medical interventions for under-18s.
In March, Talarico went viral after accusing Christian nationalists of trying to “twist a religion of love to justify their hate.”
He added: “Being a Christian is about loving thy neighbour, not bullying LGBTQ people, chasing pregnant women across state lines, harassing librarians, silencing teachers and defunding our schools.”
