Professional wrestler Aaron Rourke made history this week as he became the first out gay singles champion in WWE history.

Also known as the “Evil Gay”, Rourke won the title by defeating Jackson Drake in the WWE Evolve Championships on 18 March.

Rourke celebrated the win by quoting an announcement from the official WWE account on 19 March.

“The road will be long and hard at many points for you kid, but keep your head up,” he said. “Someday your dreams will come true. Thank you to everyone for the love and support. This is just the beginning.”

He also received praise from fans. “Heck yeah Aaron. Followed this guy for a while all because haters criticised his looks and life choices and if bigots can look past all that, there’s a very talented wrestler,” one fan wrote.

“Wow congrats, you are definitely changing the game for the future, you’re gonna be a great champion,” said another.

Fans shared the same sentiment on Instagram, underneath a post in which he declared: “It’s my time to shine.”

One said: “Clock it.” Another commented: “The divas are sooo up.”
