US: Louisville Mayor comes out in support of same-sex marriage
The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, has officially come out in support of same-sex marriage.
At the US Conference of Mayors meeting in Dallas, Texas on Friday, Greg Fischer joined the almost 500 members of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry.
“It is clear to me that discrimination of any form should not be tolerated and that committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the protections that only marriage can provide,” he said in a statement, saying he was proud to join, and to “pledge my support for fairness and family.”
“Louisvillians, Kentuckians, and the rest of America have been on a journey towards support of marriage for same-sex couples,” he continued.
The group is an initiative of Freedom to Marry, a national same-sex marriage advocacy group.
Fischer is the second mayor in the state to come out in support, but the first of a big city in Kentucky.
