Photos: Rainbow crossing unveiled for Totnes Pride
A group in the rural Devon town of Totnes have created their very own rainbow crossing.
Special rainbow crossings have become a popular part of recent Pride celebrations, with crossings unveiled in both Brighton and London earlier this year.
Not to be outdone, campaigners in the small town announced last month plans to create their own crossing.
The Proud2Be group raised £415 in crowdfunded donations, in order to pay for materials to create the temporary liquid chalk crossing, which was finally completed in the early hours of this morning.
Totnes Pride teamed up with local artist Karen Abadi, who lead a group of volunteers in creating the design, outside St Mary & St George Roman Catholic Church in the town centre.
A statement said: “The crossing has been created with liquid chalk spray and will still be seen after Pride as it gradually fades, as more people walk over it, in readiness to be recreated for Totnes Pride 2015.
“It interest from local people as they made their way home, who all expressed their delight and excitement about the crossing and the forthcoming Pride event.”
Totnes Pride will take place on September 6, with a parade through the town kicking off around 10am.
Proud2Be founder Mat Price told Pink News: “We are so excited about this year’s Pride.
“Along with our committee and volunteers, we have been working hard to ensure that Totnes Pride is a community event we can all be proud of.”
“For us Totnes Pride is not only a chance to celebrate diversity in our town but to also acknowledge how far we have come as a community in our fight for equality and how much there is still left to achieve.”
