Magazine apologises to 30-stone man disqualified from Mr Gay UK
A magazine has apologised to a 30-stone man who was disqualified from the Mr Gay UK competition on a technicality.
In the documentary, he says during the competition that he was told to put on some underwear, but that organisers said they only had size small or medium.
Boyz magazine provided a journalist to sit on the three-judge panel of the competition which took place at the Black Cap pub in North London.
Speaking to PinkNews, Managing Director of Boyz Magazine, David Bridle, confirmed the magazine had apologised to Stavros, but said the magazine did not make the decision to disqualify Stavros.
Saying he did think he was disqualified because of not appearing in the underwear round, Bridle said the decision was made by the then Black Cap manager, who has now left.
Bridle also refuted the claim made in the documentary that Boyz did not include pictures of Stavros in the magazine the following week.
He said: āWe have apologised to Stavros on Twitter for the coverage in Boyz and some of the words used. We did not make the decision to disqualify Stavros but we did report it.
āWe have been criticised on Twitter but it is not true to say that pictures of Stavros were not included in Boyz as the attached page of the original spread shows. Stavros is clearly in the centre picture and in the background of two others.ā
The Mr Gay UK competition has released a statement, which read: āWe were totally shocked & unaware of the situation regarding Stavros being replaced as the London heat winner.
āFollowing our investigations we would like to make it clear in 2012 there was not an official representative from Mr Gay UK in attendance at the London heat and that the judges and audience decision appears to have been overturned at the venue without our knowledge.ā
