A broadcast journalism student received a surprising email after inviting a local UKIP representative to speak on her radio show.

Leeds University student Charlie Smith emailed UKIPā€™s Yorkshire regional secretary Peter Morgan to invite him onto her programme, The LGBT Show.

After several attempts to contact him, he eventually emailed back to ask ā€œCan you please tell me what are lgbt people?ā€

Ms Smith told The Tab: ā€œItā€™s unbelievable that, in 2015, somebody who works for such a well-known political party cannot know what LGBT means.

ā€œAnd even if he didnā€™t know what it meant, it only takes two seconds to Google what it means ā€“ the fact he didnā€™t even have two seconds to Google its meaning is pretty upsetting for a young LGBT person like myself.

ā€œWhen I first opened it, I thought ā€˜surely this must be some sort of awful joke?ā€™ but it wasnā€™t.ā€

According to the  UKIP Yorkshire website, Mr Morgan used to be a Conservative before joining UKIP. The site says: ā€œPeter has been a member of UKIP for seven years.

ā€œHe joined the Leeds Branch and after a short while was appointed Branch Secretary, a position he still holds today.

ā€œHe joined UKIP because in his opinion the Party is the only one that speaks Common Sense.ā€

UKIP has frequently come under fire for its members and candidates attitudes towards LGBT people.
