Traitors icon predicts eyes on Maya Jama as yawn twist goes ‘way deeper’

Paul Gorton and Maya Jama

Maya Jama’s time on The Celebrity Traitors could be coming to an end – or, at least, it would be if The Traitors legend Paul Gorton was playing alongside her.

Gorton appeared on the second series of the civilian version of the BBC show in 2024, playing as a Traitor. While he played a good game, he was eventually banished, with his fellow Traitor Harry Clark going on to win the show.

Speaking to PinkNews, on behalf of BetWright Casino, Gorton suggested the latest “murder in plain sight” twist could spell trouble for Traitors Maya Jama and James Acaster.

Friday’s episode saw the Traitors instructed to get a Faithful to yawn, “boring them to death”. However, as the series go by each year, Faithfuls have started to pick up on the fact that the Traitors may be more tired than the others due to their later nights in the turret.

Gorton said: “The ‘yawnathon’ is way more deeper than what everyone’s talking about. The whole narrative inside of The Traitors now is, Traitors are more tired, and now there’s a game where Traitors have to yawn.

“If it was me having to do that, I’m not yawning. I’m out of that room, because at some point someone might turn around and go, ‘Maya, you were really tired last night,’ and it’s that little seed that makes you go, ‘What else is Maya doing?'”

He went on: “I think it is a genius game to play.”

The cliffhanger ending made it appear either Ross Kemp or Jerry Hall could be “murdered”, as they were in the room with Jama and Acaster yawning at them.

But Gorton isn’t convinced Kemp or Hall will end up being “bored to death”.

He told us: “I actually think it might be someone walking into the room at the last second, or they might fail and everyone comes back, which would just be chaotic and beautiful.”

Content creator King Kenny, the third recruited Traitor, took himself out of the room – probably a wise choice, considering he is the third recruitment.

Neither Acaster nor banished Traitor Hannah Fry wanted to be Traitors – which Gorton calls “barbaric”.

He told us: “All I wanted to be was a Traitor, a villain. Let me go in there and be bad. I can’t imagine being like, ‘No, I just want to try and find a Traitor.'”

‘Finding a Traitor is like whack-a-mole’

But, he pointed out, finding the Traitors early on isn’t always the best idea.

“Finding a Traitor is like whack-a-mole, they just keep popping back up,” he said. “You don’t find them and then they’re gone. You find them, they get recruited.

“If you’re a Faithful, you shouldn’t try and find Traitors and tell people. You should try and find them yourself, make friends with everyone.

“And if you do find one, like Maya, and befriend them and take them to the end of the game, then you switch it on them.”

But will any of this year’s Celebrity Traitors be clever enough to do that? Only time will tell…

The Celebrity Traitors continues Thursday at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
