Campaign urges donors to avoid ‘bigoted’ Salvation Army over LGBT stance

A campaign hopes to urge donors to the Salvation Army to choose a different charity over its stance on LGBT issues.

The campaign by America Blog allows users to download “vouchers” to give to those collecting for the Salvation Army.

Blogger John Aravosis called the charity “evangelical bigots”, noting its past stance on various LGBT issues.

The vouchers read: “This holiday season I am supporting organisations that do not discriminate in any way against people based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other reason.

“I will NOT donate to the Salvation Army, and will instead give to other charities, until the Salvation Army stops discriminating against the LGBT community in hiring, firing and promotion, and in the provision of benefits.”

An Australian Salvation Army chief suggested in 2012 that sexually active gay people should be put to death – while In March this year,a homeless trans woman was allegedly left on the streets in Dallas, after the Salvation Army refused her housing

The organisation last year took issue with “untrue” accusations that it has problems with homophobia and transphobia – referring to claims as a “myth”.

However, a “Nondiscrimination Communications” memo – sent out in 2014 to brief members nationally – was obtained by Queerty, and shows that discrimination is still very much in effect.
