Nicky Morgan sacked as Education Secretary and Equalities Minister
Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan has been sacked amid new Prime Minister Theresa May’s reshuffle.
The former Education Secretary tweeted this morning to say she was “disappointed” not to continue in her role as Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities.
She wrote: “Disappointed not to be continuing as Education Secretary & Min for Women & Equalities – two wonderful roles it’s been a privilege to hold.”
It appears that Mrs Morgan has not been appointed to another role in Theresa May’s Cabinet.
Earlier today Michael Gove was sacked as Justice Secretary in the reshuffle which began after Mrs May took over as Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs Morgan last month backed inclusive sex education in schools.
Earlier this year, the government dismissed a report earlier this year calling for LGBT-inclusive sex and relationship education to be made statutory in all schools, with rumours at the time that Downing Street had intervened to block Mrs Morgan from agreeing to reform.
After voting in 2013 against the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act, Mrs Morgan later admitted that she regretted her decision, and backed equal marriage.
She delivered keynote addresses at the PinkNews Awards in 2014 and 2015, last year saying that gay ‘cure’ therapies must be “stamped out” in the UK.
In 2014 she was heckled by Labour MP Ben Bradshaw for voting against same-sex marriage, and explained her reasons for doing so.
It is rumoured that the Women and Equalities brief will be moved to another department, possibly Health.
