‘It’s not our pride, faggots’ Manchester United fans turn on club for celebrating gay love
Manchester United football club has been barraged with homophobic comments after posting a celebration of the city’s upcoming Pride.
This weekend marks Manchester Pride, and the world-famous Premiership squad is getting in on the spirit.
Taking to their official social media feeds, the club wrote: “Manchester Pride this weekend – always a great celebration. Enjoy yourself if you’re heading along!”.
If you have any doubt about how far football has to go to tackle homophobia, check out some of the comments.
One ‘fan’ wrote:”Disgraceful by man United advertising this disgusting rubbish Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve”.
Another added: “Homosexuality is a mental disorder. We love them and help them cure. Not promote their lifestyle.”
A third wrote: “Its not our pride faggots”
Another so-called fan hit out at the club, adding: ” i am Christian so it’s not something I think is right”.
Earlier this year, Man United made a landmark commitment to tackle homophobia in a match against rivals Arsenal.
They exchanged pairs of giant rainbow laces – a symbol of Stonewall’s campaign against discrimination in sport.
Speaking of United’s support at the time, Stonewall chief executive Ruth Hunt said: “We’re thrilled that Manchester United and Arsenal have pledged their support to the Rainbow Laces campaign. By doing so, they are stepping up as allies to LGBT people and showing their commitment to making their clubs inclusive and supportive for LGBT players, supporters and members of staff.
“We hope that other clubs and sports will follow their lead and lace up to change sport.”
