Judge says ‘same-sex marriage’ is an oxymoron ‘like jumbo shrimp’

A judge in the US has said the term “same-sex marriage” doesn’t “make sense” to him.

The Kentucky Family Court Judge Tim Philpot, who has in the past ruled in favour of same-sex couples’ adoption cases, described same-sex marriage as “an oxymoron”.

Comparing same-sex marriage to “jumbo shrimp”, Judge Philpot said gay couples are “in a sterile relationship”.

Speaking at a Christian education gathering around 8 September, he said: “Those words don’t make sense to me,” said the judge. “The words ‘same-sex marriage’ don’t make sense to me.”

But the Judge did go on to expand on his remarks, saying: “But I’ve been thinking about this same-sex thing for 20-some years. I was in the Kentucky Senate for awhile and I used to give some speeches on the subject. I’ve been in a meeting with people in the room and I was the only so-called straight person.

“It’s an interesting journey that there’s been over the last 25 to 30 years.

“The first thing that’s happened to me, though, is a personal transformation – is that anybody who describes themselves as gay or lesbian, I have discovered inside of me a phenomenal love for them that I didn’t have back in the old days.”

“It’s just there,” he added. “I can’t help it. I didn’t ask for this. It’s just there. I think it’s because I’ve had so much contact with them. Half the adoptions I do are for gay people.”

“And they’re not bad people… They’re just – as Dr. Kinlaw said — they’re in a sterile relationship but they often want children. So, for those of you who are straight, they’re just saying, ‘if you don’t want these kids, we’ll take them.’ And the judge says, ‘okay.'”

“But same-sex marriage to me is an oxymoron,” Judge Philpot continued. “The definition of marriage is not something the Supreme Court is in charge of, not really. Same- sex, marriage, if you understood what Dr. Kinlaw was saying, the union is in the difference. So having a sameness in marriage is really very illogical.”

“It’s an oxymoron, like ‘jumbo shrimp,'” said the judge. “Kind of like the dog show I was watching a few years ago where the announcer said that was a ‘magnificent chihuahua.’ I went, ‘I don’t think so.’”

“Those words don’t make sense to me… The words ‘same sex marriage’ don’t make sense to me.”

The Judge joined the Fayette County Family Court in January 2004, and was re-elected to the position, which holds an 8-year term, back in 2014.
