The Colorado Christian University organised a rally to defend a religious baker who is seeking to undermine LGBT discrimination protections.
And speaking at the event was a Rabbi who compared gay people to “space aliens”, reports the Colorado Times Recorder.
Jack Phillips of Colorado’s Masterpiece Cakeshop is at the centre of a case over anti-LGBT discrimination that is set to be heard by the Supreme Court.
Phillips launched a legal challenge after being found in violation of state anti-discrimination laws for refusing to serve gay couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig.
The baker earlier this year claimed that Jesus Christ would discriminate against gay people, and continues to insist his religion requires discrimination against gay people.
Speaking at the Christian University, Rabbi Yaakov Menken of the Coalition for Jewish Values made the outlandish comparison.
He said: “If space aliens were to land tomorrow, they would solve the problem. Now some of you probably think I’m nuts, but let me explain. Let’s imagine E.T. lands tomorrow and someone falls in love with E.T. and decides to get married to ET. Trust me – within two years the Supreme Court would decide that under the US Constitution Sally – or Bill – could get married to E.T.
“But because aliens are not human beings, and despite what you’ve seen on Star Trek, it would be impossible for aliens and humans to have children together – that would be the Biblical definition of marriage – and Jack Phillips would not be able to bake them a cake.
“And then it would be obvious that he’s not discriminating against anyone. He’s not singling out same-gender couples for exclusion. On the contrary he is saying he can only celebrate a Biblical marriage that involves a human man and human woman. And the ACLU would have to pack up and go home. Are your lawyers taking notes, Jack?”

The Supreme Court is set to weigh in on the case later this year, and it could have extreme knock-on effects for LGBT rights.
It today set a December 5 date to hear arguments in the case.
A ruling in favour of the baker could have a chilling effect on LGBT rights protections country-wide, and equality activists fear it may end up creating a license for homophobic discrimination based on religion.
The case is expected to be close, with Trump’s newly-appointed Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch considered a firm vote for the baker’s freedom to discriminiate.
The Trump administration itself has filed an amicus brief backing the freedom to discriminate.
