Sonic Colours Ultimate, a remaster of the 2010 Wii game, will be released later this year.

The game will be coming to Xbox consoles, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via the Epic Games Store on 7 September.

The news came in the first ever Sonic Central announcement video, which included plenty of Sonic news for this, his 30th anniversary year. Wow, we feel very old now.

Widely considered one of the best Sonic games in recent years, Sonic Colours sees the blue hedgehog teaming up with wisp characters with special abilities in both 2D and 3D stages.

There will also be an animation called Sonic Colours Rise of the Wisps, which features a unique art style. The first episode will debut this summer.

In addition, the Sonic Central video ended with a tease of an upcoming brand new Sonic game due in 2022.

It simply showed Sonic running through a forest and a strange symbol on the ground. Could this be a Sonic Adventure 3?

Elsewhere, a number of smaller projects were announced.

To celebrate the anniversary, Sonic will be popping up in a number of other games: the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 video game; the hilarious Two Point Hospital strategy game; and Lost Judgement, the new game from the Yakuza team that will include Sonic the Fighters in its arcades.

A virtual symphony concert will take place on 23 June that will be free to watch, featuring orchestral versions of classic Sonic tunes.

Sonic Prime, a new Netflix show, will be coming out next year and is set to be a “fun and exciting series for Sonic fans of all ages”.

A new compilation of the classic Sonic games – Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic CD – will be coming to current consoles next year, with more details to come later this year.

There will be updates to Sonic mobile games, including the addition of the Werehog in Sonic Forces, and classic stages added to Sonic Racing on Apple Arcade.
