Overcompensating is an upcoming comedy-drama from Benito Skinner, and its first trailer has featured Brat superstar Charli XCX in an instantly iconic scene.
Created by and led by internet star Benito Skinner as a closeted student embarking on his journey at his (apparently very homoerotic) college, Overcompensating‘s first trailer is here.
There’s all kinds of mischief afoot, including Skinner’s character desperately trying to fit in to – you guessed it – overcompensate for his sexuality.
In fact, the very first scene of the trailer sees Benny masturbating in a toilet stall to images of a topless man to maintain an erection, before running back into his bedroom with girlfriend Carmen (Wally Baram) and declaring, “I’m hard!” The subtext being, ‘Let’s get down to business before I lose it’.
The trailer also sees Benny dressed for a toga party, being spanked by a cricket bat in a frat house (we’ve all been there), and the assembled cast of Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco and Rish Shah navigating college.
“Come as you aren’t,” the trailer’s tagline tells viewers – before Brat superstar Charli XCX pops up after the title card to tell an assistant exactly where she can stick the singer’s seminal hit.
“You think I want to play ‘Boom Clap’ in a f**king college, are you f**king joking?” rages Charli. Now that’s brat.
Somewhere, All Stars 6 lip-sync assassin Kameron Michaels is applauding the notion.
Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Kaia Gerber, Julia Shiplett, Tommy Do, Alexandra Beaton, Claire Qute, Elias Azimi, and Maddie Phillips will all star in recurring roles.
Overcompensating, which is being produced by A24 and Amazon MGM Studios, will drop all eight episodes on its release.
Scott King serves as showrunner and executive producer and Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin executive produce for Strong Baby – and Charli XCX is the executive music producer for the series.
Overcompensating will be available to stream on Prime Video on 15 May.
