Dylan O’Brien has expressed his gratitude for the relationship he enjoys with his non-binary sibling.

The star of The Maze Runner trilogy has also been seen in HBO series Fantasmas and as the protagonist’s pimp and secret love interest, Vinny, in Ponyboi, a film written by and co-starring intersex actor and activist River Gallo.

Speaking to Vulture about the queer neo-noir thriller and the role LGBTQ+ people play in his life, O’Brien – who shot to fame alongside “sexually fluid” Tyler Posey in Teen Wolf – said: “I have a trans, non-binary sibling and I know people who are queer. I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world.”

O’Brien’s sibling, Julz, who uses he/ they pronouns, often shares photos on Instagram of them together.

In an interview with Adobe about Ponyboi, O’Brien admitted: “Going in, I was extremely uneducated on intersex and the intersex community. This was such an enlightening experience for me, and [River is] someone I hold so dearly now: a friend I’ll have with me for the rest of my life.”

O’Brien is also set to be seen in queer comedy Twinless, which is due to hit cinemas in September. The film follows two men who meet in a twin bereavement support group and start a bromance. He told Variety that one particularly emotional scene was ” the most naked thing I’ve ever had to do on a set”.
