Pedro Pascal, Harry Styles and a RuPaul’s Drag Race winner are among hundreds of celebrities backing Planned Parenthood’s lifesaving healthcare.
In response to threats from president Donald Trump’s administration, hundreds of celebrities have signed a full-page Planned Parenthood advert calling for support of the US organisation’s healthcare initiatives, which include gender-affirming care.
In March, a federal judge blocked enforcement of an executive order signed by Donald Trump that threatens federal funding for any medical institution providing gender-affirming care to trans youngsters.
On Wednesday (21 May), the advert was launched in the New York Times. It features more than 250 leading cultural changemakers declaring: “I’m for Planned Parenthood.”
The advert, which declares the signees’ support for freedom and the healthcare provided by Planned Parenthood health centres, states: “Because I’m for freedom… because I’m for healthcare… because I’m for you and me — not the government — deciding what care we need and where we can get it.”
The advert has been signed by more than 250 celebrities, including, Pedro Pascal, Harry Styles and All Stars 3 champion Trixie Mattel. Further signees include, Addison Rae, Billy Porter, Scarlett Johansson, Stevie Nicks and Laverne Cox.
‘Planned Parenthood health centers play an irreplaceable role in our health system’
Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said: “Every day, Planned Parenthood health center staff open the doors of health centers to ensure patients — no matter who they are — can get access to the essential health care they need.
“Planned Parenthood health centers play an irreplaceable role in our health system. I applaud these cultural changemakers and everyone across the country who have said, loud and clear: I’m for Planned Parenthood.”
Trans actress and presenter Laverne Cox said, as reported by the Rolling Stone: “Trans people need health care providers they can trust, just like everyone else. Planned Parenthood health centers are a lifeline for so many across this country who rely on them for inclusive care.
She added that the organisation “provides a space for queer people to feel safe, supported, and affirmed in who they truly are.”
At the end of last year, the organisation partnered with a school in New Jersey, USA, to teach sex education and healthcare to students with disabilities.
