Sydney Sweeney has provided an update on Euphoria season 3, describing it as “unhinged”.

HBO confirmed that Euphoria season 3 would begin filming in January 2025 after the process was hit by delays. The network announced that the new series would begin with a time-jump that would take the main characters out of high school.

Now, Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie in Euphoria, has shared an update on what fans can expect from the long-anticipated third season.

In an interview with Empire magazine, The White Lotus actress described the upcoming season as “unhinged”.

The 27-year-old said: “I have such a spot in my heart for [Sweeney’s character] Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear.

“She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love. It could be a sad version of love, as well.”

She added: “It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is. Sam [Levinson] is such a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m all in.’ And this season is unhinged.”

As mentioned above, season 3 is expected to begin with a time jump that takes the main characters out of high school. However, beyond that, little is known about what will happen in Euphoria‘s third season — even the cast reportedly remains in the dark.

One of Euphoria’s stars Hunter Schafer – who plays Jules Vaughn – previously gave fans some insight into her level of knowledge about the project, saying: “The real tea is I have no f**king idea what’s going on.”

Zendaya, who plays Rue in the show, said something similar back in April last year during the premiere of her tennis-inspired film Challengers.

However, Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO, confirmed to TV Line that Zendaya will be reprising her role, adding it’s “hard to imagine doing [the] show without her”.

It’s also a safe bet that many of the main cast of characters – including Schafer, Apatow, Sweeney, Eric Dane, Nika King, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira and Jacob Elordi – will get some air time in the next season.

Production for Season 3 has faced various setbacks — the main one being the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Another contributing factor is the series’ stars, such as Zendaya and Jacob Elordi, being occupied with other projects like Challengers and Saltburn.

HBO previously said that the network and Levinson are “committed to making an exceptional third season” and said that they are “allowing” the “in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities”.

Additionally, Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, passed away in August 2023 at the age of 25. His character was reportedly set to be an integral part of Season 3, meaning the script had to be rewritten.

In November of that year, the show’s producer, Kevin Turen, died of heart failure at the age of 45

An official return date is yet to be announced, but Euphoria season 3 is now expected to arrive next year.
