Orville Peck has landed a new acting role, and this time it’s opposite Aquaman‘s Jason Mamoa.
The masked country singer is currently starring as the Emcee in the Broadway production of Cabaret. But now he is set to appear in a big-screen adaptation of Street Fighter.
The live-action film is based on the popular arcade game in which players face off in one-on-one battles. It is also set to feature Gangs of London star Andrew Koji and Black Adam and Warfare‘s Noah Centineo.
Details about Peck’s role are unknown but one rumour doing the rounds is that he will play the villainous Vega. The character, said to be a fan favourite, wears a mask, which seems appropriate, and wields a long metal claw.
Vega is one of the highest-ranking minions of Street Fighter‘s main antagonist, M Bison, who runs the criminal organisation Shadaloo and is constantly seeking world domination.
The news of Peck’s casting was broken by Deadline.
Anyone familiar with arcade or video games is likely to be at least somewhat familiar with the Street Fighter series, which began in 1987.
The games feature various martial artists who compete against one another, each with a set of special moves.
Before taking to the stage in Cabaret, Peck released four albums: Pony, in 2019, Show Pony (2020), Bronco (2022) and Stampede (2024).
Peck has starred as the Emcee without his trademark mask, and told The New York Times: “It is part of my expression personally as an artist and a very big personal part of me. But I’m here to play this role and to bring respect and integrity and hopefully a good performance to it. It’s not about me. I’m not trying to make it the Orville Peck show”.
Peck will be appearing at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway until 20 July.
