Actor Ezra Miller has made two public appearances at the Cannes Film Festival.

Miller, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has had a difficult few years but appeared at the swanky Cannes Film Festival, in France, and the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, in Cagliari, on the island of Sardinia.

Miller spoke about appearing at Cannes to Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale, on Thursday (19 June), saying: “I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world, Lynne Ramsey, who is one of the greatest living filmmakers.”

Ramsey, whose latest film Die My Love, was being screened at the festival, directed Miller in We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011 and they claimed they will be working together again in the future.

“It’s a film that her and I are writing together and I came to Cannes because she asked me to come, and if there’s anything I still believe in in my life, it’s devotion to one’s people, one’s loved one… above all else.”

Miller, seen on screen most recently in 2023’s The Flash, admitted that they “didn’t necessarily want” to be there, adding: “That’s a tough re-entry point. If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes but I did that for Lynne. I would do anything for Lynne.”

In the past few years, Miller has faced charges of felony burglary, harassment and disorderly conduct.

In 2022, they pleaded no contest to a charge of disorderly conduct and paid a fine of $500 (£410), after shouting obscenities at guests in a Hawaiian hotel.

In August that year, Miller announced they were stepping back from the spotlight to address “complex mental-health issues”, going on to say: “I want to apologise to everyone I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
