Gavin Casalegno, one of the stars of The Summer I Turned Pretty, has opened up about his bisexual character’s story in season three of the hit Prime Video series.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the novels of the same name by Jenny Han, who also adapted the series for Prime Video.

Lola Young stars as Isabel “Belly” Conklin whose family holidays with her mum’s friend’s family which includes brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Casalegno) Fisher. Over the course of the first and second seasons a love triangle has emerged between the three, with Belly and Jeremiah getting together at the end of season two.

Ahead of the final season Casalegno discussed what’s in store for his character who, in a deviation from the books, is bisexual.

“It was fun, especially on my side of things, seeing how much the character grew throughout the season and how you could really see the maturity in the decisions towards the end of the series,” Casalegno told Entertainment Weekly.

“So the final scenes were kind of a nice, happy button for Jeremiah — at least, I hope that people watching feel that way.”

In the same interview Han added that writing for Jeremiah in season three was some of her “favorite stuff.” She said: “All the work [Casalegno] was doing in the back half of the season, it was like a real pleasure to see.”

Appearing on Live with Kelly and Mark, he said of his character’s arc: “I feel like I relate a lot to Jeremiah… I think you get to see Jeremiah really grow up in this series specifically.”

Admitting that many fans are ‘Team Conrad’ rather than ‘Team Jeremiah’, he added: “But that’s OK, because I asked Chat GPT which team it was on… and it was Team Jeremiah.”

A synopsis for season three reads: “It’s the end of her junior year of college, and Belly’s looking forward to another summer in Cousins with her soulmate, Jeremiah. Her future seems set, until some core-shaking events bring her first love Conrad back into her life. Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart. Summer will never be the same…”

Casalegno has commented on the decision to update the series by making his character bisexual in the past. In 2023, Casalegno praised Han for modernising her writing, saying, “I’m honoured to be a part of the change in the film industry.”

The first two episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three premiere on Prime Video on Wednesday 16 July with new episodes released weekly after.
