Alan Cumming said society “treats rapists better than trans people” in a powerful US TV appearance.
The Traitors US host, 60, came out swinging for the trans community while guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying that “evil billionaires want to get rid of trans people for no f**king reason.”
During his opening monologue on Tuesday night (22 July), Cumming addressed the transphobic conspiracy theory which purports that rapists are pretending to be trans to enter women’s bathrooms, saying there is “no evidence” to back up the claim.
“Why on Earth would a rapist go to the bother of pretending to be trans in a country that actually treats rapists better than trans people?” he exclaimed.
A long ally of the trans community, the bisexual actor and writer said during the monologue that trans people are “superheroes” and described them as “special and magical.”
“Like superheroes, they grow up in a society that doesn’t understand them, makes them the other, and often hits them,” he continued. “Like superheroes, evil billionaires want to get rid of trans people for no f**king reason whatsoever.
“And just like superheroes, trans people are not new. They’ve been around forever and they’re not going anywhere, no matter how much [the Trump Administration] tries to make you fear them.”
Trump calling trans people a threat is ‘the pot calling the kettle black’, says Cumming
Cumming then hit out at US president Donald Trump’s attacks against the trans community, including a litany of executive orders banning medically-backed trans healthcare, preventing trans people from serving in the US military, and declaring that there are only “two sexes.”
He deplored Trump’s claim that trans people are a “threat to women,” instead pointing to the 79-year-old president’s history of misogynistic rhetoric and the array of sexual misconduct allegations against him.
“There is, however, ample evidence that the president of the United States publicly brags about barging into beauty pageant dressing rooms and grabbing women by their p***ies,” Cumming said. “Wake up, America!”
In 2016, the Washington Post published a leaked audio tape in which Trump said he grabbed women “by the p***y.”
Cumming’s speech comes as Trump is embroiled in controversy over accusations that he refuses to publish documents regarding infamous sex offender Jeffrey Epstein because of his relationship with the now-deceased financier.

“How dare this president make random, unfounded accusations of sexual criminality against trans people when he was literally ordered to pay $83 million to a woman who accused him of sexual assault,” Cumming continued. “It’s the pot calling the kettle black after trying to grab its handle in the changing room of a T.J. Maxx.”
It isn’t the first time the actor has hit out against Trump’s transphobia. In January, he said during a guest spot on The View that he thinks the government’s actions against the community are “awful.”
“I can’t imagine what it must be like to be a trans person knowing that the government is trying to legislate that you do not exist,” he continued. “What kind of country are we in where we take rights away from people?”
