Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have revealed the “wild” reason that Freaky Friday 2 took 22 years to come to fruition.
The upcoming film, Freakier Friday, is set to see stars Lohan and Curtis reprising their mother-daughter dynamic as Anna and Tess, respectively. Hitting cinemas next month, Freaky Friday 2 marks over two decades since the release of the 2003 Disney hit.
Speaking to People Magazine, the pair were asked why it took over 20 years for them to return for a Freaky Friday follow-up.
“Well, Lindsay and I have been in each other’s lives since we made that movie. That is first and foremost,” trans advocate Curtis said.
To this, Lohan added: “It’s the most important thing, I think.”

Curtis continued, explaining: “And everybody I’ve ever spoken to has asked, ‘Will there be a Freaky Friday sequel?’ When I went all around the world for Halloween Ends in 2022, every stop, they asked. And the answer was ‘Lindsay has to be old enough to have had a teenager.’
“So then obviously Lindsay had this beautiful baby. She came and visited me, brought the baby. At this moment we started really seriously talking about it,” she said, referring to Lohan and her husband Bader Shammas’ son Luai, now aged two.
The reporter then remarked that the Freaky Friday franchise paralleled the actors’ lives. “When we started shooting the original, I was 15, about to turn 16,” Lohan replied.
“And I had a 15-year-old daughter at home. And now Julia [Butters],” who plays Lohan’s daughter Harper Coleman in Freakier Friday, “is 16. It’s so wild.”
Last year, Disney confirmed the follow-up to its hit family comedy. Freaky Friday 2 is set to see Anna with her own daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter.
“As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” as per a Disney press release.
Original stars Mark Harmon (NCIS), Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill) and Christina Vidal (The Guilty) also returned for the sequel. Meanwhile, new stars on the Freakier Friday roster include Butters (The Gray Man), Sophia Hammons (Under Wraps and Under Wraps 2) , Manny Jacinto (The Acolyte), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live) and Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live).
Freakier Friday hits cinemas in the US and UK on 8 August, and in Australia on 7 August.
