President Donald Trump has backed Sydney Sweeney’s controversial “great jeans” American Eagle advert, calling the commercial the “hottest out there” after it sparked backlash among liberal voices – and after Sweeney’s voter registration was confirmed.
Sydney Sweeney, who is set to star in the upcoming lesbian boxer biopic Christy, found herself at the centre controversy after her latest advert for clothing company American Eagle. The ad features a double entrendre, with Sweeney celebrating her “great jeans”/ “great genes”.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue,” Sweeney says in the 23 July ad, titled “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”.
Liberal voices objected to the ad, claiming that it glorifies Sweeney’s skin colour, blond hair and thin physique, and prompted a wider discussion on eugenics.
After the White House itself defended the American Eagle advert, Sweeney was then confirmed to be registered with the Republican Party since 2024, as per public voter registration records confirmed by PinkNews and multiple other news outlets.
President Donald Trump himself has now praised Euphoria actress and confirmed his approval for the “fantastic” advert.
In a lengthy Monday (4 August) post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’
“Go get ‘em Sydney!” he added. American Eagle stock has surged 23 per cent in the wake of his praise, according to Forbes.
His post also referenced brands like Jaguar and Bud Light for what he called “woke” campaigns, the latter of which had a partnership with trans activist Dylan Mulvaney.

In the post, Trump went on to call out “woke singer Taylor Swift,” whom he “can’t stand”, going on to say for a second time that he “hates” her. He first shared his disdain for the performer after she publicly endorsed his then-rival Kamala Harris during the presidential race.
“She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became NO LONGER HOT,” he claimed.
Trump concluded: “The tide has seriously turned – being woke is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The attention from Trump has caused American Eagle stock to rise by 24 per cent to $13.32 a share, which gives the brand a market cap of $2.3 billion, as per a New York Post report.
Sweeney and American Eagle Outfitters have yet to comment on Trump’s praise, though the brand said in a statement on Instagram after initial backlash that the campaign “is and always was about the jeans”.
“Her jeans. Her narrative. We will continue to honor the unique ways everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence,” it said. “Great jeans flatter everyone.”
