Lady Gaga leads VMA nominations with 12 nods – including Artist of the Year

Lady Gaga has become the most-nominated star of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards for the third time, with 12 nominations at the 2025 VMAs.

Watch your necks, little monsters, because mother did not come to play – but we already knew that.

Lady Gaga, in between releasing her raucous seventh studio album Mayhem, performing its accompanying tour, and taking a brief trip to Nevermore Academy in Wednesday season two, has found herself at the top of the pack for the 2025 VMA Awards.

Gaga has picked up nods in the prestigious Artist of the Year and Best Album categories (the latter for Mayhem), and a respective four and six nominations for her Bruno Mars collaboration “Die With a Smile” and Mayhem single “Abracadabra“.

“Die With a Smile,” released in August 2024, and received VMA nominations for Video fo the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Pop song.

“Abracadabra” meanwhile, was recognised for Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects.

2025 marks the third year that Lady Gaga is the most nominated artist of the pack; she previously held the honour in 2010, when she held 13 nominations, and in 2020 when she tied with Ariana Grande, with nine each.

Gaga’s “Die With a Smile” collaborator Bruno Mars tails mother monster at the 2025 VMAs, holding 11 nominations – with all of his nods coming from either “Die With a Smile” or Rosé collab “APT.”

Kendrick Lamar holds 10 nods, including Video of the Year for “Not Like Us”. It will compete in that category with the aforementioned Gaga-Mars duet, as well as Ariana Grande’s “Brighter Days Ahead“, Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” and The Weeknd and Playboy Carti’s “Timeless.”

The 2025 VMAs will air 7 September on CBS for the first time, as well as on MTV, and a livestream on Paramount+ (for premium subscribers).
